We recommend puppies come in for their first grooming visit after they begin their puppy vaccinations — usually around 10–14 weeks old, depending on your veterinarian’s recommendation. Early grooming visits are incredibly important because they help puppies learn that grooming is a safe, positive experience. At Tailored Tails, our goal is to help puppies build confidence with grooming from the very
beginning. Just like learning any new skill, grooming is something puppies need time to become comfortable with.
A puppy’s first appointment is typically focused on introducing them to the grooming environment
rather than completing a full haircut. During these early visits, we gradually introduce puppies to
bathing, drying, brushing, nail trimming, clippers, scissors, and grooming equipment in a safe and
low-stress manner.
For most puppies, we do not recommend a full haircut on the first visit. Allowing puppies to slowly
build confidence helps create a safer and more positive grooming experience throughout their lives
Puppy appointments are often priced lower because puppies are smaller and their visits are usually
shorter, with less coat to manage. As your puppy grows, grooming requires more time, more
product, more drying, and additional handling. As a result, the price may increase with each
appointment until your puppy reaches their adult size and coat type.
This gradual increase reflects the additional work involved as your puppy matures and allows us to
provide the individual attention needed to keep grooming a positive experience.
Regular grooming appointments every 4-6 weeks help puppies become comfortable with the
grooming process and make future visits easier. Patience during the first few appointments helps
build lifelong grooming habits and reduces stress for both your dog and groomer.
Thank you for trusting Tailored Tails with your puppy’s care. We look forward to watching them
grow!
